Simon Cowell, love him or hate him, adds a necessary balance to the free willy style opinions of the other judges.
Without Cowell I'm fairly certain the show will lose a certain edge it has and you'll see the shows polls drop in a really big way.

Yeah, sometimes he's brutally honest, but sometimes he's just brutal. Either way, he does add spice to the show that keeps me from falling asleep.
